How to actually get a job in Dubai: what works in 2026
In 2013 I landed in Dubai with a sales CV, one contact and enough savings for a short runway. Thirteen years later I have sat on the other side of the table and hired for warehouses, last-mile fleets and head office roles. So when someone messages me asking how to get a job here, I do not send them a list of portals. I send them this.
First, understand what kind of market this is
Dubai is not an application market. It is a referral market with an application layer on top. When I needed a warehouse manager, the role was filled nine days after I first mentioned it to my own network, and the job advertisement was still collecting CVs when the chosen candidate signed. That is not corruption and it is not unfairness. It is a city that moves too fast to read eight hundred CVs when one trusted sentence will do: I know a person.
Your entire job hunt is the project of becoming the person someone mentions in that sentence.
Climb the referral ladder
Nobody important needs to know you yet. That is fine, because referrals work like a ladder and the bottom rung is always reachable. Start with people who already owe you nothing but goodwill: old colleagues who moved to the Gulf, classmates, suppliers you once treated well, your home community association, the active members of industry groups on LinkedIn. Ask each one for fifteen minutes of advice, never for a job. Advice costs them nothing, so they say yes. Then, at the end of a good conversation, ask one precise question: who else should I be speaking to? One name per conversation is a compounding machine. Ten conversations become twenty-five, and somewhere in that tree sits the person whose team is quietly stretched and hiring next month.
Run the 50-10-3 rule
Hope is not a pipeline, so give the hunt operations discipline. Fifty target companies that genuinely employ people like you, written down with the names of their team leads. Ten real conversations started every week, meaning messages to named humans, not applications into a void. Three interviews a month as the minimum output you hold yourself to. When a week misses its number, you diagnose the funnel exactly like I diagnose a fulfilment operation: no replies means your pitch is wrong, replies but no meetings means your profile is weak, meetings but no offers means your interview story needs work. Fix the leaking stage, not your mood.
Be present, or be precise about when you will be
A CV with a UAE number and a local address gets read differently, because a candidate who can interview tomorrow beats a slightly better one who needs a month and a flight. The UAE runs visit and job seeker entry routes for exactly this purpose; check the current rules on the official u.ae portal and plan a focused trip with your pipeline already warm, not a vague stay that burns savings while you build it. If you cannot travel yet, put your arrival date in the first line of your profile. Clarity reads as seriousness.
Make every line of your CV carry a number
Dubai is a commercial city and it reads CVs commercially. Managed a warehouse is a claim. Held 99.6% inventory accuracy across three sites with daily cycle counts is a capability someone can picture and price. Go through your CV line by line tonight and ask one question of each: where is the number? No number, no line.
- Write your list of 50 target companies and find one named human at each.
- Send three advice requests to people one step closer to Dubai than you.
- Rewrite your top three CV lines so each carries a number.
Dubai does not owe anyone a job, and it never pretends to. What it offers is better: a market that genuinely rewards visible, organised effort, faster than almost anywhere on earth. I have watched average candidates out-run brilliant ones here simply by treating the search like a shift they showed up for every single day. Show up for yours.
